Last year, Google started offering alternative modes of vehicle navigation, where instead of the shortest trip, it offers more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly routes.
The problem is, different vehicles consume fuel differently.
While gasoline engines make up the majority of the American vehicle fleet, more and more hybrid, electric and diesel engines are starting to appear on the road.
Top Albania Radio writes that the latest beta version of Google Maps tries to solve this problem by introducing a mode in which the user selects the engine of his vehicle and ‘optimizes’ the route for minimal consumption.
The 9to5Google portal points out that the choice of engine will be in the navigation request, as well as in the application settings. The new options will become available over the next few weeks.
