An explosion that shook the giant Hoover Dam, in Nevada, USA, was caught on camera by horrified tourists who saw the ball of fire and thick smoke rising from the monumental dam.
The local police confirmed to the media that an explosion had occurred at the plant at the base of the dam without yet providing details of possible damage or injuries.
Several firefighting units came to the scene to put out the fire that started after the explosion in the A5 transformer.
Regional director Jacklynn L. Gould said there was no risk of emergency power outages, according to the network 8NewsNow.
The historic dam was built from 1931 to 1936 to divert irrigation water and generate electricity from the Colorado River.
It is one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the US, generating about 4 kilowatt-hours of energy per year.
The dam’s power plant has 17 main turbines, 9 on the Arizona side and eight on the Nevada side.
