A gang of robbers in Southern California stole millions of dollars in jewelry and gems from an armored security vehicle last week, officials said today.
Brandy Swanson, director of the San Mateo International Jewelry Show, south of San Francisco, said the rare items stolen were worth more than $100 million.
Dana Callahan, spokeswoman for Brink’s Security Group, confirmed that the valuables were loaded into one of their vans after a July 10 exposure, and were stolen en route to Los Angeles.
Swanson said 25 to 30 bags of jewelry were stolen and that “18 victims of the robbery” reported significant losses in the aftermath.
But Callahan questioned the calculated figure.
“According to the information we were given before loading the objects, their total value did not exceed $10 million,” the Brink group said in a statement. “We are working with law enforcement authorities and all customers will be refunded the value of their stolen goods, according to the terms of the contract with us.”
Swanson added that jewelry operators often insure their assets at lower than actual values due to high coverage costs.
“In these cases, inconsistencies emerge later. A lot of people have lost their life’s worth,” Swanson said.
Laura Eimiller, spokeswoman for the FBI in Los Angeles, said the robbery happened near the desert town of Lancaster as the truck traveled from an event in San Mateo to the Pasadena Convention Center.
