Hunter dentist Lawrence Rudolph, 67, is accused of brutally killing his wife Bianca Rudolph on a 2016 leopard-hunting trip to Zambia for $5 million in life insurance.
“I killed my wife for you,” the Pennsylvania dentist later told the former lover, the court heard.
Prosecutors said Lawrence “Larry” Rudolph planned to kill his wife during a hunting trip in Africa.
Bianca Rudolph was gunned down in their lodge hotel in Zambia in 2016, as her husband claimed she shot herself.
Rudolph had confessed the incident to his girlfriend Lori Milliron at a restaurant in Arizona in 2020 after learning the FBI was investigating the deceased woman’s death.
“He killed the woman for his girlfriend,” prosecutor Bishop Grewell said at the trial in Denver as he waved at Miss Milliron in the courtroom.
The 67-year-old is charged with murder, mail fraud and faces the death penalty if convicted.
Rudolph has denied being responsible for his wife’s death, telling authorities in Zambia that he was in the bathroom where she shot herself while packing hunting weapons before the couple returned to the US.
His trial is taking place in Colorado where insurance payments have also been made.
The prosecutor told the jury that Rudolph was found in a state of shock after the fatal shooting, saying the woman had accidentally discharged the gun, causing it to discharge.
Authorities in Zambia after two days of investigation determined it was an accident and insurance inspectors reached the same conclusion.
But the jury was told of Markus Phoenix’s guilty plea which was heard by a witness who said: “They were saying ‘I killed my damn wife for you'”.
The couple had two children and had visited Kafue National Park in 2016 in order for Bianca to fulfill her wish by killing a leopard.
