The approval of France’s proposal in the parliament of North Macedonia failed for the second day in a row, the clashes between the opposition and the majority made it impossible to pass the vote, postponing the continuation of the session to Saturday.
The marathon session started at 11:00 in the morning on Friday and was accompanied by insults, arguments and even physical clashes. Actors in the incident were MP Dimitarr Apasiev from “E majta” and Martin Kostovski from SDSM. thanks to the timely reaction of the rest of the deputies, a physical collision was avoided and everything was left to the extent of exchanging insults and provocations.
MPs of VMRO DPMNE prevented the MPs of the ruling parties from giving their speeches by blowing their horns. They were accused by the deputies of SDSM, that apart from chaos, they offer nothing else to the citizens of North Macedonia.
The French proposal envisages overcoming the differences between Skopje and Sofia regarding the Macedonian language, identity and historical past, while the Bulgarian side asks the Macedonian side to include the Bulgarian minority in the preamble of the Constitution, as equal to other peoples.
Disagreements on these issues have caused Bulgaria, as a member of the European Union, to block the start of North Macedonia’s EU membership negotiations for more than two years.
France’s seven-point proposal requires concessions from both sides. Skopje, among other things, should commit to changing the Constitution, with the aim of recognizing the Bulgarian minority as a nation equal to others.
The approval of the proposal in the Assembly would mean holding the first intergovernmental conference between Skopje and Brussels, and also Tirana.
