Italian President Sergio Mattarella has rejected the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, a few hours after the latter requested it.
According to an official statement from the Italian Presidency, Mattarella asked Draghi to address parliament first.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced he will resign hours after the government’s coalition partner the Five Star Party withdrew his support in a landslide vote of confidence on Thursday.
The former head of the European Central Bank has led a unity government since February 2021. In a statement, he said the trust pact that had supported the government had disappeared.
“I will submit my resignation to the president of the republic this evening”, he said.
The refusal of the Five Star Movement to support the key aid decree in Italy, which was anyway voted on Thursday without their support, signaled the fall of the government.
The decree, which became a bone of contention, will allocate billions of euros to families and companies, in an effort to curb the effects of the energy crisis and inflation. But the Five Star Movement’s refusal to vote in parliament caused a major crisis as his party is one of the most important in the ruling coalition.
Draghi had claimed that he would leave the government if the Five Star Movement left the majority in power.
