The new omcron subvariant, version Ba 5, is responsible for increasing infections, the US administration has concluded, and has announced a new strategy to curb the spread of the highly contagious subvariant.
This comes at a time when the government was already developing a plan to make second booster vaccines available to all American adults.
The White House said BA.5 is responsible for the majority of new Covid-19 cases in the US. The US is averaging about 100,000 new cases of the coronavirus each day, and hospitalizations have been on the rise since April.
The White House said it would step up efforts to vaccinate more people, especially in areas where BA.5 is spreading fastest, and encouraged Americans to get tested regularly.
Even to emphasize the importance of the situation and possibly the return of social distancing measures, President Biden avoided shaking hands when he landed in Israel on Wednesday for an official visit.
The Biden administration’s new plan, which still needs to be approved by regulators, has the backing of the White House’s Covid-19 coordinator and the government’s top infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci.

The science is clear that Covid-19 vaccines remain our single most important tool to protect people and prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and deaths, and the up-to-date position on booster vaccines ensures that people have the most the highest possible level of protection”, announced the experts.
