Prime Minister Edi Rama personally presented to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg his project for establishing a naval base of the alliance in Albanian territory.
“I greatly appreciate your availability to devote some time to us in our conversation to present to you our ambition to add another important value to the infrastructure and logistics of our alliance, making available to NATO a base of the navy of the last word that will be a place that we can not only build, but we can build with the challenges of our time in mind, from climate change, from environmental protection and everything else.” said Edi Rama.
Edi Rama confirmed his public warning about the establishment of a military base in the area of Porto Romano in Durrës, but chose not to give details about this project.
The Secretary General of NATO himself did not comment on Prime Minister Rama’s proposal, but appreciated Albania’s commitment to promoting stability in the region.
“NATO stands with Ukraine while defending itself against Russia’s cruel war. NATO stands with Ukraine while defending itself against Russia’s brutal war. We are providing unparalleled support models and this will continue in the long run. I welcome Albania’s support for Ukraine as well as your recent commitment to humanitarian aid. Also, your recent visit to Ukraine was an important proof of solidarity”, Stoltenberg said.
Prime Minister Rama’s plan to build a NATO military base has been commented by foreign media as a threat of Albania to Russia and its influence in the region.
