A miner who was believed to have died in a gallery explosion has miraculously escaped a week after the serious event.
Leonid Moiseev, 49, was among 190 miners trapped underground when strong tremors toppled the giant rock of the Raspadskaya coal mine in Russia’s remote Kemerovo region.
Only two of all the miners remained unevacuated, as local reports said Moiseev, a married stepfather to the woman’s two children, had died.
But a few days later the search groups received a signal from their sensors.
After digging about 50 meters into the collapsed rock, they found the miner alive, stuck in a cavity that had ventilation passages through which he could breathe.
The second missing miner was found dead.
Leonid was smart and could talk to the doctors, explaining that he had fractures in his ankle and pelvis.
Local mayor Vladimir Chernov posted the good news: “Alive, rescue teams dug to the spot where the driver of the drilling rig had disappeared during the collapse.”
“The miner was injured but alive. He quickly rose to the surface and was handed over to the doctors.”
“Since the massive collapse of July 5, he had been waiting for help and did not give up. He is a true hero.”
Searches in the mine continue. The plant is partly owned by the former owner of the English club Chelsea, Roman Abramovich, through his company Evraz.
