A banner from the Israeli anti-occupation group Peace Now, in anticipation of Joe Biden’s visit this week, has been hung on a building in the coastal city of Tel Aviv.
It reads in Hebrew: “President Biden, welcome to the two countries we love most,” referring to Israel and Palestine.
With his trip, Biden has said that he wants to “deepen and expand” the process of normalizing relations between Israel and the Arab countries, initially started by former President Trump.
The Jewish state will host Biden with pomp despite the turmoil of the fifth election in less than four years in November.
Biden will meet with Prime Minister Yair Lapid, and may also meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Biden begins his tour of Israel on Wednesday, but attention also appears to be focused on his stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.
His plane will make the unprecedented flight from the Jewish state to the conservative Persian Gulf kingdom that does not recognize his existence.
Donald Trump had made the historic flight in the opposite direction in 2017.
Then a presidential candidate, Biden said in 2018 that the gruesome murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi had “isolated the country”.
While after the victory, his administration said that the revelations show that Biden and the Saudi crown prince were the organizers of the operation.
It is unclear how US-Saudi cooperation norms may evolve over the current state of affairs.
