A huge fire engulfed the Via Casilina area in Rome this Saturday.
Many citizens reported on social media that they had heard explosions coming from the Centocelle park area in Rome.
According to Tg24, the flames started from the bushes of an uncultivated land where piles of garbage and abandoned containers were burning. The flames had also reached the Torrespaccata area and had also touched several buildings.
Quadraro station police evacuated the residents of two buildings in via Fadda after flames had spread to a tent on one of the balconies.
The fire also involved cars in the area of Via Palmiro Togliatti.
According to what the firefighters report, the fire started around 16:50 in via Casilina and no one was injured while they were at the scene.
The thick cloud of smoke is visible across the eastern part of the capital including the Cinecittà area, the Appio district and the center of Rome, as well as the Circus Maximus.
At the scene, in addition to firefighters, there are carabinieri, police and local police officers.
The flames would also have affected an abandoned area near the archaeological park of Centocelle. A part of Viale Palmiro Togliatti, where the cars damaged by the fire are located, is closed to traffic.
“Dramatic situation, close the windows. It is a dramatic situation. The fire has not yet been brought under control and thanks to the wind it is also reaching the area of Via Papiria. We invite citizens to keep the windows closed and use masks even on the streets in the area affected by the dense smoke clouds”. so declared the mayor of the 5th municipality of Rome, Mauro Caliste.
At the end of extinguishing the big fire that has engulfed the eastern area of Rome, an initial information will be sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. As happened with other fires that have engulfed the capital in recent weeks, the magistrates will continue with the opening of the investigation file.
