The Tirana fire brigade, after fighting the smoke and flames, managed to get the 6-month-old baby out of the apartment with signs of life, since the family members could not evacuate him in time.
The baby was rushed to the hospital but could not survive due to the large amount of smoke he had inhaled.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on “Gani Domi” street in Tirana, where a private residence was engulfed in flames. At the time of the incident, the baby was in the custody of the grandmother Janulla Lilaj, as the divorced mother was not in the apartment. The sick grandmother left the apartment as soon as she noticed the smoke, while the grandson was taken out by the firefighters.
From the window, shortly after midnight, 2 units of the fire brigade intervened and extinguished the fire, which was suspected to have been caused by a cooking canister. The operation to save the baby was difficult as the apartment was engulfed in smoke and flames and the baby was on the first floor, which is partially underground and unventilated.
Neighbors say that the situation in the first moments was chaotic and the grandmother in the first moments forgot that she had her grandson inside the apartment engulfed in flames.
“Janulla lives with her daughter and grandson. Suffers from Parkinson’s. He came out shaking. When we asked him about his grandson, he remembered and started crying and screaming. Firefighters brought the child out alive. We saw him when they put him in the ambulance. He died in the hospital.”
