Boris Johnson’s Prime Ministership appears to be over. Boris Johnson resigned as Conservative leader today and will continue as Prime Minister until the autumn.
Johnson will publicly announce his resignation later today, after a spokesman said he would make an extraordinary statement on Thursday.
More ministers and former allies have withdrawn their support for the British prime minister and are calling on him to resign, but Johnson has resisted, saying he would fight on, at least for now, despite Tory MP Kris Pincher’s latest sex scandal involving Doëning Street is sinking him more and more.
The spectacular unraveling of Johnson’s political career may now be hours away; while Conservative lawmakers are discussing the possibility of redrafting their party’s rules and voting to overturn it if necessary.
So far, the number of ministers who have resigned from Boris Johnson’s government has reached 55, while his “faithful” Brandon Lewis, who held the position of secretary of Northern Ireland, has also left recently.
