One of the most wanted men in Italy, the gangster Rocco Morabito, has arrived in Rome today after being extradited from Brazil where he was hiding for decades.
Otherwise known as the “cocaine king of Milan”, Morabito was finally arrested in May last year in a joint operation by the Brazilian and Italian police.
The 55-year-old will now serve a 30-year prison sentence for drug trafficking.
The mobster had spent decades using false identities in South America.
Police tracked him down last year in João Pessoa, a port city in northeastern Brazil, where he was arrested along with fellow infamous ‘Ndrangheta group Vincenzo Pasquino, who has been jailed for 17 years for drug trafficking.
Morabito was born in the Calabrian town of Africo and is related to the old mafia boss Giuseppe Morabito. He became a key figure in the ‘Ndrangheta criminal network, expanding the criminal network in Italy and beyond.
After making a deal of more than a ton of cocaine from Latin America, he disappeared. According to the police, he had gone to Brazil where he lived under the false name of Francisco Capeletto.
He then settled in neighboring Uruguay, where he lived in the Punta del Este resort for at least 13 years.
After his arrest in 2019, Morabito spent two years in prison before his extradition, which was authorized last week by Brazilian courts.
