Authorities in Iran have closed three cafes in the central city of Qom because female customers were not wearing their headscarves, local media reported.
“Three cafes were closed in Qom due to numerous violations, including the lack of women’s veils and other issues,” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement published in the Hamshari newspaper.
“The owners of the cafes have been summoned by the police before legal action is taken,” the statement said. The Shiite holy city of Qom is home to dozens of religious seminaries and senior clerics.
Under Islamic law implemented in Iran after the 1979 revolution, women must wear a hijab that covers the head and neck while hiding the hair.
Many have not fully followed this rule, where over the years they have allowed their head coverings to slip and reveal more hair, especially in Tehran and other large cities.
