The gunman who opened fire at a shopping center in Denmark last night, killing three people and injuring four others, was reported to be mentally challenged and had no terrorist convictions, police said today.
The gunman, named as 22-year-old Noah Esbensen, shot dead three people inside the Field’s shopping center in Copenhagen in the terror that lasted about 15 minutes.
Baby-faced killer Esbensen was arrested after the massacre and appeared in court today in what is considered Denmark’s worst mass murder.
He spoke only to confirm his name as he was surrounded by heavily armed police.
His unfortunate victims were two local 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, and a 47-year-old Russian living in Denmark.
The injured were two Danes, a 40-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman, and two Swedish citizens, a 50-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl. Investigators said the victims were random and that the attacker acted alone.
Earlier, Esbensen had posted videos posing with rifles and pistols on social networks.
He also posted suicide-themed music and wrote that the anti-psychotic medications “don’t work anymore.”
He mentioned in the post the name of a medication used to treat psychological disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depression.
Local investigators spoke after footage emerged of the killer, dressed in a jacket and shorts, walking through the mall with his rifle in hand.
As he walked on one of the upper floors of the mall, the attacker appeared to pause for a few seconds in front of those filming him with cellphones.
Police said the killer had two weapons for the attack, a Sauer rifle and a Walter pistol, but it is not clear whether either was used in the massacre.
The weapons were legally purchased but the attacker did not have permission to use them, officers said.
