As the discussions continue in North Macedonia whether to accept the French proposal to resolve the impasse with Bulgaria, President Stevo Pendarovski considers it “acceptable”, describing it as a “transitional compromise”, to start membership talks with the European Union .
After the meeting of the National Security Council, in which the main institutions of the state participate, the president said that the government should also approve a conclusion or annex to the modified proposal that it will reject the talks if during this process the Bulgarian side insists that to negotiate the Macedonian language and identity.
“We should not wait for someone to block us, but we should immediately withdraw from the talks. I say this because we know who we are dealing with”declared the Macedonian head of state, who believes, however, that with the modified French proposal, the issues related to the Macedonian identity are not endangered and that there can be no question of the Bulgarianization of the Macedonians, as the opposition and other political and academic figures in Macedonia claim. “The fear of some Macedonians that we will enter the EU only as Bulgarians, does not hold. How can a Macedonian become a Bulgarian?… In the history of world diplomacy there is no such thing, that with a bilateral or multilateral agreement someone overnight changes your identity”he said, while adding that he does not see the proposal as a historical triumph, nor as a failure.
The largest opposition party in the country, VMRO-DPMNE, considers this proposal unacceptable and has asked Prime Minister Kovacevski to reject it, offering in return to give up the demand for early parliamentary elections.
