The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, is in Algeria, where Albania has won another medal in the Mediterranean Games “Oran 2022”.
He is there in support of Erkand Qerimaj, who received the silver medal in the breakaway style in the 73 kg weight, to give the latter the medal.
Qerimaj started the competition with a weight of 148 kg, a test which he failed to pass successfully. Qerimaj tried immediately, again with the same weight, 148 kg, but was unable to hold the barbell high. The Shkodran weightlifter tried in the third test with 149 kg, a weight which he managed to keep up, but at first the body of judges considered it irregular, which brought tension and protests from Qerimaj and the entire Albanian delegation. After verification, Qerimaj’s test was considered regular, a weight that gave Qerimaj a silver medal in the breakaway style.
