Turkey has no intention of going to war with Greece, the president of the country, Recep Erdogan, said on Friday, but if their interests are affected, they will not stand idly by.
Greece is not keeping its promises, according to the Turkish president.
“They committed 147 air violations. If we are neighbors, if we are friends, why are you violating our airspace 147 times?” Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul after Friday prayers.
“If those violations of our airspace continue, then we will do what we have to do.”he said.
Erdogan also said he refuses to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis until the Greek leader, as he put it, ‘comes to his senses’.
He told reporters on his return from Madrid that NATO leaders at the summit had offered to mediate and arrange talks with Mitsotakis.
“We told them ‘sorry, but we don’t have time for such a meeting at the moment.’ Because it is clear that they are militarizing the islands,” Erdogan said.
“Let him withdraw, as long as he does not withdraw, there is no possibility of a meeting”he said.
Last month, Erdogan criticized Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his comments about Turkey during an official visit to the US, saying the Greek prime minister is no longer fit to deal with him.
Turkey in recent months has also stepped up criticism of Greece for deploying troops on islands in the eastern Aegean off the Turkish coast. The Greek government, on the other hand, calls the request a deliberate misrepresentation and has accused Turkey, a NATO member, of increasing hostilities in the area.
