Public radio and television workers in France have launched a massive strike against government plans to lift television licenses, a move they say will “end the existing diversity of television and news programs”.
Fees from television licenses help fund public radio and television. Employees of France Televisions and Radio France were joined by journalists and cameramen from France 24, Arts and other media organizations at a rally in the capital Paris before marching on the National Assembly.
“I have been working for France Télévisions for 30 years. For 30 years I have seen things get worse little by little, but now they are not getting worse, now they are falling into the abyss. They are changing the way we work. I do not understand why they suddenly decide to change the way public service is financed. “I think the license fee offers French viewers a quality public service with programs and newspapers they would probably not see elsewhere.”said Nathanael de Rincquesen, journalist and presenter at France Télévision.
“I am here so that they do not tell us that we do not have money, but in the meantime they receive more and more money from us. We are trying to adapt to elementary tools, which in the end, reduce the quality of our work. “Meanwhile, the money is going elsewhere, and we do not know where.”said Pierre Delrieu, journalist of France 24.
The license fee costs 138 euros a year, but it has been decided to be canceled in plans announced by French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron intends to replace it with direct funding from the government, but has not given any more details about the idea.
