At least 49 inmates were killed and dozens more injured Tuesday morning during an escape attempt from a Colombian prison.
The news was confirmed by a Colombian official of the National Prisons Agency for VET.
““So far there are 49 dead.”said a spokesman for the National Prisons Agency, adding that the number from the city of Tulua was preliminary and “could change”.
The tragedy occurred during an escape attempt that also caused a fire that engulfed the entire building. According to preliminary data, more than 40 people were injured.
Outgoing President Ivan Duque posted on Twitter offering his solidarity with the victims’ relatives.
“We are sorry for what happened in the prison in Tulua, Valle del Cauca, ”Said Duque. “I have given instructions to clarify this terrible situation. My solidarity is with the families of the victims.”
Fatal prison riots are not uncommon in Latin America. In neighboring Colombia, about 400 prisoners have been killed in six riots since early 2021.
