NATO leaders will gather in Madrid on Tuesday, in what is considered to be one of the most important Western alliance summits in recent years, following Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on June 27 that a three-day summit would agree on a new package of assistance to Ukraine in communications, anti-drone systems and oil.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to address NATO leaders and its allies via video link.
Turkey’s blockade of Finland and Sweden’s membership in the alliance is also a hot topic of discussion.
Stoltenberg is expected to meet the leaders of the three states before the start of the summit.
NATO’s proclaimed unity is being tested, as Turkey, which has the second largest army in NATO after the United States, is seeking guarantees from Finland and Sweden regarding Kurdish groups that Ankara considers terrorist.
The summit is expected to change the official positions on Russia, as from 2020, the alliance sees Moscow as a strategic partner.
“This will not be the case in the strategic concept we will agree on in Madrid,” Stoltenberg said.
“I expect the allies to see clearly that Russia poses a direct threat to our security, our values and the international rule of law.”
The summit, which opens with a working dinner on June 28, will be attended by leaders of non-NATO countries, including the leaders of South Korea and Japan, as observers.
