Eighteen migrants have died and several others injured after a large crowd tried to cross into the Spanish enclave of Melilla, Moroccan officials said.
Some reports say some of those who died fell from the border fence.
Several law enforcement officials and migrants have been hospitalized for treatment following Friday’s clashes.
This is the first time such a large number of migrants have attempted to cross the border, since Spain and Morocco re-established diplomatic ties in March.
The two countries have restored communication after Spain backed Morocco’s plan for autonomy in the disputed region of Western Sahara.
Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish enclave, have in recent years become key points for migrants from the Sahara, trying to penetrate Europe.
