Prime Minister Edi Rama and Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti presented today one of the newest initiatives of the Albanian Government, “Art in Public Spaces”.
A multifaceted initiative, has already allocated a fund of about ALL 200 million.
18 public spaces have been identified that will be filled with works of art.
They extend from North to South and it is not only about squares, but also roundabouts, public institutions or overpasses, such as two roundabouts in Koplik, two in Bajza, Divjaka, Grabian, Kavaja, the overpass at “Plepat”, the overpass at the Palace with arrows ”, University Hospital Center“ Mother Teresa ”etc.
“Certainly the program has a purpose and I hope the effect of stimulating the art scene and supporting the actors, the protagonists of this art scene and in the end, I am very confident that with the inclusion of artists who have the talent and have the right professionalism “The impact on the public space and on all those points that are beaten by many eyes and are among the people will be important”, said Edi Rama.
The competition opens today, June 24 and is addressed to both local and foreign artists.
Each applicant or group of applicants can submit three projects.
The works will be evaluated by an international jury, which will be set up after the completion of the first phase of the competition.
“A limit of 3 project ideas has been left, no more, but it is not limited to just one project idea for an individual or a group. Time is not enough, I am very aware that time is not enough, 45 days is very little, but because structuring the program, laying all the legal basis for the program took some time, then this year will to be a little more hurried and then for next year the competition will open a little faster “, said Rama.
In this scheme will engage Albanian and foreign visual artists, architects, designers, lighting engineers, etc. The aim is to improve the image of public spaces.
The Prime Minister said that in the future this project will be expanded to see the possibility of direct purchase of works by artists.
