The Bulgarian blocking veto against Northern Macedonia and consequently against Albania on the European path, seems to be coming to an end.
Bulgarian opposition leader Boyko Borissov told a news conference Wednesday morning that he had asked 59 members of his GERB party to give the green light to northern Macedonia and Albania at the opening of the first intergovernmental meeting with the EU. .
“Our party is ready to lift the veto on Northern Macedonia on the eve of the European Council meeting, if the parliamentary committee on foreign policy convenes in an extraordinary session this Wednesday afternoon. “If the prime minister does not do that, then our GERB party will talk to the pro-Euro-Atlantic parliamentary groups in parliament, if they agree on an extraordinary meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy, from where the French proposal will be approved.”
Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Borissov stressed that decision-making on the issue is turning into an emergency, which is anxiously awaited by Balkan and EU leaders, as the European summit is being held on June 23rd and 24th.
This readiness of Boyko Borissov must receive the support of Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, against whom a no-confidence motion is held in parliament on Wednesday evening.
It is French President Emanuel Macron through a proposal which stipulates that bilateral relations between Skopje and Sofia will be part of the negotiation process with the EU.
The approval by the Bulgarian parliament of this proposal removes the veto on Northern Macedonia.
Boyko Borissov’s stance on lifting the veto on Northern Macedonia was thanked by Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi.
On behalf of the EU, Commissioner Varhelyi thanked the opposition leader Boyko Borissov for making a historic decision for Europe and for accepting negotiations with Northern Macedonia based on the French proposal that allows the continuation of the opening of membership negotiations with Northern Macedonia. .
The Bulgarian veto on Skopje has left Tirana hostage to the fate of Northern Macedonia.
In the previous meetings of the European Council, the separation of Albania from Northern Macedonia on the European path was not taken into account.
