In March of this year, about 970 Albanian citizens applied for asylum in one of the countries of the European Union, according to data published by Eurostat.
Compared to the previous month, application requirements increased by 5%, but again they remain much lower than in September last year, when they reached close to 1800, at pre-pandemic levels. For the first three months of the year a total of 2900 applications were registered, almost tripling compared to the same period a year ago, when movements were still limited due to the pandemic.
France remains the main country that expects the highest asylum applications from Albanian citizens, due to the greater social facilities it offers to them. About 50% of the total applications go to France (for January-March 2022), followed by Germany, with 23%.
Partial data for April and May this year show that the upward trend of applications in France has continued, reaching 480 in May 2022, the highest level since September 2021.
Eurostat no longer reports statistics from the United Kingdom, since 2020, but before this period the data showed that this country was also preferred by asylum seekers, with about 200-300 applications per month.
Applications in Europe
According to Eurostat, in March 2022, 73,850 asylum seekers for the first time (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in EU Member States, 115% more compared to March 2021 (34,310) and 35 % more compared to February 2022 (54,565).
The increase from February to March 2022 can be attributed mainly to Ukrainian applicants for the first time (from 2 370 in February to 12 875 in March; + 443%) due to Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.
Based on the available data, the largest number of Ukrainians receiving temporary protection in the EU was registered in Poland (1,142,375 Ukrainians with temporary protection at the end of May 2022).
In March 2022, Ukrainians were the largest group of asylum seekers (12,875 first-time applicants). They were followed by Afghans (7,770), Syrians (7,320), Venezuelans (4,705) and Colombians (3,565).
With 14,135 first-time applicants registered in March 2022, Germany accounted for 19% of all first-time applicants in the EU. Germany was followed by Spain (11,130, 15%), France (10,240, 14%), Italy (6,035, 8%), Austria (4,295, 6%) and Romania (4,270, 6%). . These six member states together accounted for over two thirds (68%) of all applicants for the first time in the EU./Monitor.al
