A woman in Thailand could not believe her fate when she found a 7-kilogram piece of “vomiting” whale that comes to more than 200,000 dollars.
Siriporn Niamrin, 49, was walking on the empty beach after a storm when she noticed a large mass that had been released off the coast of Nakhon Si Thammarat province on February 23rd.
When she saw it more closely, she realized that the substance smelled like fish, so she withdrew her discovery believing it might be worth some money.
As she sought help from neighbors to find her in an oval shape, Siriporn was shocked to learn that the mass was what was known as a “vomit” whale or ambergris, and that it weighed just over $ 200,000.
To verify the authenticity of the ambergris, Siriporn and its figs lit a fire causing a part of it to soften, and then harden again after cooling.
Siriporn is waiting for experts at its home to confirm the value of ambergris, which is a rare ingredient used in the perfume industry.
The woman said: “If I have found a real ambergris, after finding a buyer it will help our community. I feel lucky to have found such a large piece. I hope you bring me money.
Ambergris is produced by sperm whales when their secretions of the digestive system create a semi-solid mass and are excreted in the form of vomit from the whale.
The piece becomes solid in water and initially has a foul odor, but after drying the body fluids remains a sweet smell that lasts, quite demanded in the perfume industry.
With currents flowing from the South China Sea, the beaches of Nakhon Si Thammarat have been the final destination of some famous pieces of ambergris.
