Terrified children holding each other tightly inside a boat that is pumping water. Shocking are the footage of a video from a superloaded sailing boat with over 100 migrants which has lost control a few nautical miles away from the tourist island of Mykonos in the middle of a rough sea.
For more than 24 hours, Greek Navy ships have continued the rescue operation after the 14-meter boat, which was coming from the Turkish coast to the Greek ones bound for Italy, suffered a mechanical defect and started to enter the water.
As of Sunday evening, ambulance crews had rescued 108 migrants, including 24 women, 21 children and 63 men. But 4-8 people are considered missing, including three children, 3, 8 and 15 years old.
“The Coast Guard has once again saved the lives of migrants, who put the ruthless circles of traffickers in mortal danger, without taking even the basic protection measures. “I congratulate everyone on their efforts in difficult conditions. Greece is resolutely defending its borders, but its first priority is always to protect human life.”said Giannis Plakiotakis, Minister of Transport and Island Policy.
The rescue operation was carried out in difficult conditions as strong winds prevailed in the area and the sea was over seven points.
Initially, three Coast Guard patrol boats were mobilized, a tugboat sailed from Mykonos, and a team of underwater missions arrived.
The boat was not equipped with any rescue equipment and none of the survivors were wearing life jackets.
She was initially towed to the island of Agios Georgios, while all the rescued migrants were brought to the island of Mykonos where the Municipality with the port authority provided them with the necessary basic things, food, milk and even toys for small children.
