French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire called the results of today’s parliamentary elections a “democratic shock”, but added that fears that he would no longer be able to run the country were unfounded.
Le Maire noted that President Emmanuel Macron’s party will retain a majority of seats in parliament, adding that it is essential to address political rivals who share Macron’s ideas.
“What worries me is that the state could be blocked, which could make us lose the ability to carry out reforms and protect the French people, especially in terms of purchasing power.” said Le Maire for France 2 television.
Republicans (Les Republicains) are potential partners Macron could turn to for the purpose of forming a governing coalition. He could also try to lead a minority government that has to negotiate laws with other parties on a case-by-case basis.
Chrstian Jacob, leader of the French conservative party Les Republicains, said today however that his party would remain in opposition after Macron lost an absolute majority in parliament.
