The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Sunday that there are no conditions for resolving the dispute with Northern Macedonia until the end of the French presidency.
According to a statement issued in Sofia, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry says that without a decision by the government and Parliament, a position on the French proposal to lift the veto on launching EU membership talks with northern Macedonia will not be possible. .
This ministry is headed by the resigned minister Teodora Gencovska, part of the party “There is such a people”, which left the government.
“If this does not happen as soon as possible, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a mandate only to adhere to the Framework position, the Parliamentary Statement of 2019 and the conclusions of the National Security Council of 2022, on which the proposed draft does not meet conditions “, it is said in the communiqué.
According to this, the Bulgarian veto would remain in force if there is no position from the Bulgarian Government and Parliament until June 21st, at the meeting of the EU-European Council for Joint Affairs on June 23rd and 24th.
The French proposal, as it has been unofficially announced, contains five points.
Skopje must confirm to the UN that it has no territorial claims against Bulgaria, that it will include the Bulgarian minority in the constitution, that it will rehabilitate the victims of Yugoslav communism, the reprisals on its territory due to their Bulgarian ethnicity, the harmonization of textbooks in line with the work of history commissions, the removal of all signs that spread hate speech against Bulgarians and Bulgaria, while the two countries will send one-sided views on their positions on the Macedonian language.
The institutions of Northern Macedonia did not comment on the proposal or the developments in Bulgaria, while the Macedonian opposition said that the proposal was unacceptable and that VMRO DPMN would not accept the change of the constitution for the inclusion of Bulgarians in the constitution.
Northern Macedonia since November 2020 can not start talks with the EU due to the Bulgarian veto.
Bulgaria has blocked the integration process for northern Macedonia due to a dispute between the two countries over the language issue and its historical past.
