British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Eurovision should be held in Kiev next year. This comment comes after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said the day before that it has started discussions with the BBC to hold the next edition in the UK due to the war.
The EBU approached the BBC to hold the festival in Britain after Sam Ryder, who represented the UK this year, was ranked second. But Johnson insists Ukraine should be the place to develop, believing the war will be over by next year.
“I do not think it is right. I hope the European Broadcasting Union accepts this. This thing is a year away. The Ukrainians won it fairly. Although we had an excellent representation, I think they should be given a chance to host the event “he said.
Ukrainian rap-folk group “Kalush Orchestra”, which was given special permission to leave the country to compete, climbed to first place with 631 points, as a symbolic display of public support after the invasion of Russia.
Despite winning the jury vote at the event in Turin, Italy, Sam Ryder, who represented Britain, came in second – the country’s best result since 1998.
“The Ukrainians won it correctly, even though we had an excellent representation, and they should be given the chance to be organizers.” stated Johnson.
Ukraine has already said it is not happy with the decision and says it believes it will be able to guarantee security for the event, despite the threat of continued Russian occupation.
Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko has said he will seek a reversal of the decision.
