‘Jumbo’, Hong Kong’s famous but aging swimming restaurant, is retiring from the city after several years of failed restoration attempts.
Residents of Hong Kong had come out in the harbors to take pictures and say goodbye to the famous restaurant, which has been seen in many local and foreign films over the years.
The 76-foot-long floating structure, which could hold 2,300 diners, set off around noon towed by tugboats after more than half a century off the coast of Hong Kong.
With a design similar to Chinese imperial palaces, the place was once considered a symbol that had attracted famous visitors from all over the world.
The owners of the ‘Melco International’ restaurant announced last month the expiration of their license and the departure of Jumbo from Hong Kong in June, to a new location.
Local resident Vong told AFP he had come specifically to watch his launch.
“He has been a symbol of Hong Kong for many years,” said the 60-year-old, adding that he had only eaten there once 20 years ago.
