An overcrowded boat with cattle sank in Sudan on Sunday, killing most of the animals on board, officials announced.
The livestock carrier ‘Badr 1’ turned out to have 15,800 cattle on board and had a capacity of only 9,000 as it was exporting animals to Saudi Arabia, from the port of Suakin in Sudan.
Crew members survived all the disaster but the large number of dead animals could cause environmental problems for the port.
A Sudanese port official told AFP: “The Badr 1 sank in the early hours of Sunday. “She had on board 15,800 head of cattle that was beyond her carrying capacity.”
The official added: “The sinking of the ship will affect port operations, and will most likely have environmental consequences from the large number of animals on board.”
Omar al-Khalifa, head of the local exporters’ association, said the ship had sunk slowly and had a chance to escape.
The total value of the cattle on board was about 14 million Saudi reais, the equivalent of $ 4 million, the official added, confirming that the live thing was loaded at the port of Suakin.
He added that about 700 cattle had been rescued but were in poor health and were not expected to live long.
Selim demanded an investigation into the serious incident.
The historic port of Suakin is no longer Sudan’s main trading point, as it has already been replaced by Port Sudan, about 60 miles[60 km]off the Red Detti coast.
There have been efforts to redevelop the port of Suakin but a 2017 agreement with Turkey on the renovation of historic buildings was suspended following the departure of former president Omar al-Bashir.
Sudan remains in economic crisis since last year’s military coup, led by military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The new military power has been rejected by Western countries seeking the establishment of a permanent administration.
