Albania can become part of the European Union mechanism for civil protection.
The 27 member states of the union and Iceland, Norway, Turkey, Serbia, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro are part of this mechanism.
Prime Minister Edi Rama submitted this Monday the request to become part of this mechanism to the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.
Lenarčič, recalling the assistance provided by the EU during the tragic earthquake of November 26, 2019 and most recently the assistance with air intervention to extinguish the fire on the island of Sazan, said that he supports this request.
“It is a pleasure to be in Albania again. My first official mission, as soon as I took office, was in Albania, after the terrible earthquake in Durrës and the surrounding areas.
Today I came to the best of circumstances, and why there was a great fire in Sazan. In both cases, at the request of Albania, the EU defense mechanism was activated immediately. 2.5 years ago our reaction was much greater, as the earthquake left many consequences
What we can learn from these two tragedies is that in all cases, Albania has had the opportunity to rely on EU solidarity. I am happy that today you handed me the official letter for Albania to become part of this mechanism “.
