A pickup truck trying to evade police pursuit in northeastern Greece collided with a fence, killing an immigrant and injuring 17 others, including the driver, Greek police said on Sunday.
The Georgian driver of the pickup truck was heading west when it collided with a police checkpoint on the main Egnatia highway. Instead of stopping, he passed quickly. After the collision, slightly injured, he tried to escape on foot but was caught.
The other 16 migrants, none of whom were seriously injured, were taken to nearby hospitals. They said they were Syrians, police say. The identity of the victim was not disclosed.
At the same time, Greek police stopped a vehicle with four migrants and another with three non-migrants apparently accompanying the other two vehicles. The three, as well as the driver of the other vehicle have been arrested, said the Greek police./ REL
