Thailand eased its cannabis laws on Thursday, and now users can even cultivate the plant, albeit under complicated new guidelines.
The change comes after the historic legalization of medical cannabis in Thailand in 2018, the first such step by a country in Southeast Asia where anti-drug laws are extremely strict.
A celebration is already taking place in Bangkok:
“I am very happy to have been born into the generation where cannabis is legalized.” said Joe.
“People cook with cannabis, make medicine with it. “So having this native plant in your hands is just amazing.”said Arun.
Thailand has previously taken a tough stance on drugs, with cannabis addicts facing up to 10 years in prison and a large fine. While the possession and sale of cannabis is now legal, but drinking the narcotic substance outside the home is not allowed.
Offenders could potentially be fined $ 780 and face up to three months in prison. Cannabis extracts with more than 0.2 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration also remain illegal.
