Ukrainian and British officials warned on Saturday that Russian forces were relying on weapons with the potential to cause massive casualties as they tried to make progress in taking control of eastern Ukraine.
The Russian bombers allegedly fired a heavy missile used against the ships, the UK Ministry of Defense said.
Kh-22 missiles were created primarily to destroy aircraft carriers using a nuclear warhead.
When used in conventional warhead ground attacks, they “are very inaccurate and can therefore cause serious damage and casualties,” said the UK Ministry of Defense.
Both sides have spent large amounts of armaments on what has turned into an erosive war for the eastern region of mines and coal mills known as the Donbas.
Russia is likely to use anti-ship missiles because it does not have more accurate modern missiles, the British ministry said.
The ministry did not provide details on where exactly such missiles were thought to have been placed and there was no immediate confirmation from Ukrainian authorities of the use of 5.5 ton missiles, reports the AP news agency.
