Germany, the world’s fifth-largest arms exporter, plans to revise its arms export rules to make it easier for democracies like Ukraine to arm themselves and make it harder for autocratic countries to sell arms.
The new guidelines, which the German publication said were being drafted by the Economy Ministry, come as Germany faces criticism from the opposition, allies and Kiev for delays in supplying heavy weapons to Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
Due to the inclusion in a new law on arms exports, the new guidelines focus on the concrete actions of the host country in domestic and foreign policy.
Agnieszka Brugger, the Greens’ parliamentary deputy speaker who controls the economy and foreign ministry in the ruling coalition, said this would make countries that shared “peaceful, Western values” less restrictive.
