Police fired on protesters in Myanmar, killing at least nine of them, doctors say, in the deadliest day since the beginning of rallies against the coup in the country.
Police beat citizens and used rubber truncheons and tear gas. Security forces launched the crackdown on Saturday, following weeks of largely peaceful protests against the military’s takeover on February 1st.
Government leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, were ousted and arrested. Social media footage from Sunday showed protesters fleeing as police chased them, improvised roadblocks were set up along the way and some people were covered in blood. The police crackdown escalated this Sunday as coup leaders tried to thwart a campaign of civil disobedience that is not coming to an end.
According to the Anadolu Agency, about 800 people have been arrested in protests against the military coup across the country since the military junta took power on February 1 in Myanmar.
Many medical students demonstrating in Hledan Square in Yangon were taken away by police vehicles today, while gunshots were also heard in many parts of the city.
