Microsoft closes offices in Russia, laying off about 400 employees

Bloomberg reports that the Redmond giant, after blocking the sale of products and services in the country in early March, has decided to completely close its offices and businesses, a decision that affects 400 employees.

“As a result of changes in the economic outlook and the impact on our business in Russia, we have made the decision to significantly reduce our operations,” a Microsoft spokesman told Bloomberg News. “We will continue to fulfill our existing contractual obligations with Russian clients.”

Microsoft CFO Amy Hood revealed earlier this year that Russia accounts for less than 1% of the company’s global revenue.

The American giant is not the first to suspend or close its activities in Russia. Many international companies, including Dell, Apple, Nike and Adidas, have long cut ties with Moscow, closing stores or shutting down sales. It is unclear whether the employees affected by the decision will be relocated to other areas of Microsoft, with the possibility of working remotely.
