Russia’s Defense Ministry has announced today that it has opened a land corridor to Crimea, which allows people and goods to pass through the occupied Ukrainian territory, which it controls.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said today during a conference that the army working on Russian railways has restored 1,200 kilometers of train tracks, thus opening a road to allow passage from Russia to eastern Ukraine in the Donbas region and to Crimea.
Shoigu added that the water supply through the Northern Crimea Canal has already started and is a lifeline for Crimea.
He asserted that the ports of Mariupol and Berdiansk were functioning normally and were ready to transport grain, following international criticism of Russia’s months-long blockade of major ports that has left millions of tonnes of grain in Ukraine.
The minister’s comments come after global leaders condemned a monthly blockade by Russian forces on major Ukrainian ports, including Mariupol in the Sea of Azov and Odessa in the Black Sea, which has left more than 20 million tonnes of grain trapped inside the country.
In a speech to the United Nations Security Council on Monday, European Council President Charles Michel accused the Kremlin of using food supplies by holding millions of tons of Ukrainian grain hostage and blocking Ukrainian ports.
