Prime Minister Edi Rama, appreciating the figure of Major General who proposed yesterday as a candidate for head of state, says that Bajram Begaj, from today becomes ready to be the new President of the Republic.
Recalling that the process started with secret envelopes where the Socialists gave their proposals for the Presidency, Rama said that all the names were considered in turn. According to him, it was a fair process for everyone.
“I can thank all the members of the parliamentary group for their contribution to this process, which is not easy, because it is about identifying a figure who must meet very specific requirements, but at the same time for him. guarantee respect and non-intimidation of all potential candidates. The process that we developed here in the group gave us the right in the end, receiving proposals from the entire membership of the group, which were then made available to the SP leadership.
In the end, the Socialists were quite surprised when they came up with the name of Barjam Begaj. The Prime Minister, at the meeting of the Parliamentary Group, says that Begaj was elected as a high professional profile and not involved in political conflicts.
“A figure with a high profile in terms of institution, as well as not engaged in all the clashes or crossroads in the political arena, which makes us feel today relieved of the burden of selection, as a dominant force, which has the responsibility dominant to lead the country and makes us feel good about Albanians”.
Currently, the Socialists will collect votes for the candidate Begaj. The signatures of at least 20 deputies are needed to support a candidate, who will then be formally deposited in the Assembly. The deadline set by the Conference of Presidents is 12:00 today.
At 16:00 the Law Commission will convene to review the constitutional legal criteria of the candidate proposed by the Socialists. Then, at 18:00, the session in the Assembly will start. Today will be the fourth round of the process for the election of the President, but the first where there is a candidate, whose name is deposited in the assembly.
In this round, 71 votes, which the majority has, are enough to appoint Ilir Meta’s successor, who will hand over the task on July 24.
