An employee of the Montenegrin Embassy in Moscow has been declared persona non grata (unwanted person) in response to the expulsion of Russian diplomats 7 times from Podgorica, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.
“Montenegrin Ambassador to Russia Milorad Scepanovic was invited to a meeting by the Foreign Ministry on May 31 and was notified that an embassy employee had been declared an undesirable person,” the statement said.
Russia said it made the decision in response to a “baseless decision” by Montenegro, which on April 7 expelled several diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Podgorica and declared them undesirable.
Montenegro deported four Russian diplomats in April. The country has also imposed sanctions on Russia over its military aggression against Ukraine.
Of the countries in the Western Balkans region, only Serbia has not imposed sanctions on Moscow, saying that with this action it is preserving the “vital interests” of the state.
