U.S. experts believe the California variant of the coronavirus is not only more contagious than all other mutations so far, but they say it could also be up to 11 times more deadly.
The “devilish” variant, called “sick” by doctors there, could also weaken the effectiveness of vaccines. This mutation, christened B.1.427 / B.1.429, appears to have been first spotted in California this winter. To date, no case of him has been discovered in the UK, but he has been found in Denmark, Australia, Mexico and Taiwan.
The team found that “B.1.427 / B.1.429” has become the predominant variant in this state after testing virus samples collected from across the state between September last year and January. The team of experts says that people infected with variant “B.1.427 / B.1.429” produced a viral load twice that of other variants, which could make the virus they carry more contagious to others.
The new variant is more likely to cause a severe form of the disease “including an increased risk of receiving large amounts of oxygen from affected persons”. It is partially resistant to antibodies that can fight and neutralize the virus.
