Illegal fishing continues to be a concern in Lake Ohrid.
A month ago the Ministry of Agriculture ordered a ban on fishing for carp, chub and sardine fish which have spawning season but illegal fishermen continue to cast nets into the lake even though this threatens their proliferation.
Taking advantage of the fact that during this period it is allowed to catch koran and belushka, the two most popular species of this lake, illegal fishermen enter the lake to cast nets, some of which were caught during controls by monitoring groups.
Licensed fishermen are the ones who feel the consequences of unfair competition, but according to them, this phenomenon also occurs due to financial difficulties and the need to provide some income.
220 licensed fishermen operate in Lake Ohrid, and although there is no exact figure, specialists say that it is likely that the same number of fishermen are illegal.
