Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called on the Kremlin to tighten its rules on foreign agents carrying out activities against the country.
Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said implementation of legislation for foreign agents should increase in the midst of this difficult period. He went on to say that the legislation should accurately classify “foreign agents” and impose stricter consequences for their actions.
“If they (foreign agents) are carrying out targeted activities against our country, especially during this difficult period – and receiving money for it from our enemies, our response must be swift and tough,” Medvedev wrote in the application. Telegram messages.
Medvedev also said he supports legislative initiatives to prosecute people working in the interests of a foreign state.
Russia has legislation that labels groups and individuals as foreign agents if they receive foreign funding to engage in what authorities say is political activity. Dozens of Kremlin critics have been listed as foreign agents, including journalists and rights activists, and many have fled the country.
