A 48-year-old father of five lost his life in the fire of his Tesla electric car after an accident, as the electronic handles of the vehicle were not opened from the outside and firefighters could not save him, according to the lawsuit filed for the event.
Dr. Omar Awan died at the February 2019 event after crashing his Model S vehicle in Florida, USA.
The 48-year-old doctor had survived the initial collision but now the family is suing the company saying the death came as a result of fire and smoke inhalation, which could have been avoided if there had been no failure of the door handles.
Tesla vehicles have special almost invisible gloves, which stand square with the body of the car.
They are locked closed when the vehicle is in motion and come out when the vehicle stops to allow people to enter or exit.
After the collision firefighters could not enter the vehicle as the gloves were not raised.
A Tesla expert said that the car door handles are lifted automatically “even in case of accident”.
But police officers said in their report that “in this case the door handles were closed.”
According to the police report, Awan at the time of the accident was driving at more than 120 km per hour.
Tesla denies the allegations in the lawsuit saying the car was fully functioning and that Awan’s death came through his own fault.
But Awan’s wife told NBC South Florida at the time: “He could have escaped, he could have been here with us, with his children. “He was only 48 years old.”
A police spokesman also told the media: “They could not find a door handle to enter and take out the driver. They tried to break the window glass but failed. “Up to that point the flames were too big.”
