Inside the tragedy of the murder of 19 children and two teachers at a school in Texas by a young gunman are also some glimmers of hope.
An 11-year-old girl saw her teacher killed by shooting in Texas and survived lying on top of one of her classmates, stained with her own blood and pretending to be dead.
Miah Cerrillo’s family has described the horrific ordeal suffered by the 11-year-old, who received bullets in the body while her hair was destroyed by gunfire.
Her father told the Washington Post that Miah saw his teacher, Eva Mireles, shot and his phone dropped. Miguel Cerrillo said his daughter picked up her cell phone and called 911.
In an attempt to survive, she lay on top of a classmate who had been shot in order to look like she was dead.
“Miah took some blood and put it on herself so she could look dead.” said her aunt Blanca Rivera.
Miah’s mother and father were among the terrified parents who gathered outside the Uvalde school while the gunman was hiding inside.
Cerrillo said he saw his bloodied daughter and another child being picked up by an officer. She was taken to hospital with bullet wounds to the neck and back, but is now well.
Miah said the girl she was lying on was breathing at the time of the incident but died before help arrived, her father told the Washington Post.
Salvador Ramos, 18, was shot dead by police after wreaking havoc on a school.
