American novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy has killed her husband at gunpoint to obtain a $ 1 million insurance ransom, it was said yesterday at the trial in Oregon, USA.
Crampton Brophy had previously written the story “How to Kill Your Husband” but ironically five years after the death of her husband Daniel Brophy, the 71-year-old is on trial for his murder.
The court was told that Crampton Brophy owned the same model of pistol with which her husband was killed and despite initial allegations that she was home at the time of her death, she was captured by security cameras going and coming from the crime scene .
Prosecutors said Crampton killed her husband in order to obtain $ 1.4 million in life insurance after she was left with bad money.
But Crampton Brophy says she had no motive to do so as the money problem was solved by cashing in on part of his retirement plan.
Lisa Maxfield, one of Crampton Brophy’s attorneys, told reporters the decision would be appealed.
In her story ‘How to Murder Your Husband’, Crampton Brophy outlined various ways to commit an ‘undetectable’ crime.
But Judge Christopher Ramras consequently ruled out involving the story in the trial, saying it could create prejudice since it was originally published in 2011.
In a 2011 essay, she wrote: “As a romantic suspense writer, I spend a lot of time thinking about murder and, consequently, police procedures.”
“After all, if I commit a murder, it should set me free, not make me spend time in prison,” she said.
Daniel Brophy was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds on the morning of June 2, 2018, at the Oregon Culinary Institute culinary school where he worked.
He should have been alone in the kitchen when he was killed and initially there was no suspect.
There were no signs of a fight or robbery at the scene, as Brophy still had his wallet, cell phone and car keys.
The sentence for Crampton Brophy is expected to be handed down at the June 13 hearing.
