Russia’s Defense Ministry today released images of its planes at high altitudes, which it said were joint patrols with China in the Asia-Pacific region.
The statement said Russian Tu-95ms missile bombers were flying with Chinese Khun-6k bombers in the waters of Japan and the South China Sea.
The development comes after an ‘indirect’ warning from Japan, India, Australia and the US, over concerns that China could seize Taiwan by force.
Their statement did not mention China literally and its growing power in the region, but left no doubt as to where the concerns lay.
The document with cautious sentences also referred to the war in Ukraine, but without holding common positions as India has refused to condemn it.
Joint Russian-Chinese patrols in the Sea of Japan came hours after the statement and representatives called them “provocative.”
“As the international community reacts to Russian aggression in Ukraine, the fact that China is carrying out such acts of cooperation with Russia is worrying,” said Japanese envoy Nobuo Kishi.
Beijing also confirmed the flights, which it said were part of an annual plan for military cooperation between China and Russia.
